Between the two World Wars, photography became a phenomenon across Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Hungary, and Poland. Formerly traditional regions found themselves in a world propelled by mass media and consumer economies. The photographic image - mechanically made, reproducible, and reusable - served to promote and to question new ways of life. It fired the imagination of hundreds of artists and thousands of inspired amateurs, and through its use in print came to symbolise modernity for millions.
Foto: Modernity in Central Europe, 1918–1945 shows the crucial role played by photography in this period, and outlines the development of modernism within central Europe. Each of the eight thematic sections in Foto brings together work made between 1918 and 1945 from across the region, comparing individual or local differences against a background of shared cultural values.
