  Years ago I went to see Trajan’s Column, created specifically to commemorate “his” victory over the Dacians, one of the most famous landmarks in Rome today. Later I lived in Spain in the same city where Trajan was born. And now of course I live in Romania, the only country that I’m aware of that is proud to be named (and partly modeled) after foreign people who invaded and conquered their land.

Last week Sorin Oprescu, the supreme mayor of Bucharest, officially unveiled a “new” statue of this emperor in front of the National History Museum. Ever since then, it has been creating a lot of controversy and has been the butt of several jokes. Even the BBC got in on the fun, talking about how odd it is that 1) the emperor is naked 2) the dog (actually supposed to be a wolf) is floating and not being held in the man’s arms and 3) why the “dog” is wearing a “scarf” (it’s meant to be the Dacian flag).

  Then ordinary Romanians started posing in front of the statue, attempting to recreate it (somewhat), all comedy gold in my opinion.

Gunoaie, resturi si ruine

Nu este ceea ce ati putea crede, niste resturi de la demolari, sau cam asa ceva. Ar vrea sa fie o “opera de arta”, ma rog, e mult spus, in fine, este vorba despre unul din “exponatele” din cadrul expozitiei intitulate Gunoaie, resturi si ruine, care a avut vernisajul vinerea trecuta la Anexa foto. Autor, un personaj cunoscut, dl Mircea Nicolae, despre care am mai vorbit pe aici. Ba chiar cred ca i-am acordat mult mai multa atentie decat meritau realmente productele dansului cu pretentii de opera de arta, conceptuala evident, dar si contemporana. Expozitia este realizata in colaborare cu dl Michele Bressan, despre care iar am mai discutat pe aici si Elena Ciobanu, despre care marturisesc ca nu am auzit pana acum, dar nicio problema, ma voi interesa cat de curand. Aceasta bine-inteles deoarece populatia de artisti contemporani fabricati in serie de catre sectia foto-video de la UNARTE este in continua crestere. Zi cu zi, ceas cu ceas, si in proportii de masa – parca asa se spunea la invatamantul de partid, despre ascutirea luptei de clasa vorbesc, ca o adevarata lupta de clasa se da, intre arta aia clasica, pe care o stim cu totii, si arta asta, asa-zis contemporana. Va veti intreba de ce totusi nu vorbesc despre “opera de arta”? Pai nu este nevoie, imaginea este destul de clara. Totusi, sa dam cuvantul si autorului. Sa vedem ce spune dansul despre lucrare. Asa sunt denumite in mod generic aceste artefacte, pentru a nu zgandari anumiti puristi, care ca si mine, nu vor sa inteleaga arta asta contemporana. Citez dintr-un fel de catalog explicativ al expozitiei, tiparit la imprimanta pe doua coli de scris a4: “1. Gunoaie de la Moara Assan. Locatarii din blocurile de langa Moara Assan isi arunca gunoaiele in curtea fabricii de paine ramase in ruina. Fabrica e foarte degradata, fiind demolata incetul cu incetul de recuperatorii de fier…”, si mai spre sfarsit sa vina si concluziile: “…daca o teorie a patrimoniului desconsidera gunoiul si apreciaza ruina, o practica a artei contemporane traieste cu greu fara gunoaie”. I-auzi monser, aici chiar a grait adanc. Uite cum din maiastre intorsaturi de condei, mormanul de moloz si resturi de la intrare deveni agent al artei contemporane. Sper ca macar sa fi fost dezinfectate cat de cat in prealabil, nu de alta, dar femeia care pazeste expozitia sta si va sta cel putin o luna in prezenta acelor gunoaie. In fine, autorul trage si concluzia, citez: “…fac astfel ca lucrurile sa fie diferite de-acum incolo”. Perfect de acord cu dansul, cu o singura observatie. Anexa foto este o anexa, n-am ce sa fac, nu exista alt termen, a MNAC – unde teoretic cel putin, ar trebui expuse opere de arta, obiecte artistice, sau cel putin artefacte cu astfel de pretentii.

Along with being an art and documentary photographer, Mahesh Shantaram also photographs weddings. He writes, ‘Wasting away in a cubicle in Washington, DC, I decided enough is enough, and went to Paris to study photography. When I returned to India in 2006, it was immediately apparent to me that the Indian wedding photography market needed some ventilation. I took it upon myself to breathe fresh air into the art of documenting Indian weddings’.

‘I’m not very much into overly romantic imagery. Shooting at Indian weddings is like war photography meets street photography. I believe what I’m really hired for is the cerebral act of making keen and positive observations in telling the story of the day. Rather than industry trends, I draw inspiration from the rich traditions of documentary photography.

While a majority of the population see quick sex, especially among homosexual men, to be amoral and dirty; I see it as potentially romantic. The landscapes in which these men make sexual connections in are not dark and terrible places but tranquil and beautiful. When the way that people interact in the world is increasingly virtual I want to reconfirm the desire to enter the natural world and make physical contact with a stranger.

Already a household name in Asia, Korean painter Kim Dong Yoo's inaugural U.S. exhibit at NYC'sHasted Kraeutler gallery aims to introduce the artist to a new, American audience. The self-titled show features a series of large-scale paintings that, from afar, depict a single grand portrait of notables from John F. Kennedy to Michael Jackson. Upon closer inspection, however, one realizes that the work is actually comprised of hundreds of smaller portraits of other, connected figures from Marilyn Monroe to Madonna.

Paul Batt is currently a PhD candidate in Fine Art (Photography) at Monash University, Melbourne, where he is also a Sessional Photography Lecturer. Paul is a graduate of both the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) photography departments. His work has been exhibited work widely throughout Australia, received several awards and grants and has had work featured in a number of publications including Photofile and ‘Look – Contempoary Australian Photography Since 1980′. ‘These images represent a series documenting and cataloguing the subtle variations of abandon sofas and couches in the suburban environment. My primary interest in the ‘Abandon Series’ is the apparent state of flux and contrast the subjects exist in. These once intimate, comfort giving, interior objects have become surreally out of place, in the exterior world.

Anne Barlow, curatorul Bucharest Biennale 5, a anunţat luna trecută lista artiştilor selectaţi, dar şi a locurilor în care se va desfăşura evenimentul din acest an. Bienala are tema ,,Tactici pentru aici şi acum” şi pune în valoare ,,creaţia unor artişti al căror portofoliu nu constă neapărat în situaţii evidente, ci mai degrabă în strategii investigative, indirecte sau informale, care posedă propria lor formă de putere”. În afara spaţiului de la Pavilionul U

niCredit, traseul bienalei include în acest an Casa Presei Libere, Institutul de Cercetări Politice, Alert Studio şi Centrul Cultural ,,Make a Point” (din incinta fostei fabrici de textile Postăvăria Română). Evenimentul va avea loc între 25 mai şi 22 iulie.

In advance of his first solo exhibition "I stand and look at them long and long" at RH Gallery, we stopped by John O'Reilly's Brooklyn studio to see what the young artist had on tap. The warehouse space is shared between four sculptural artists working with communal equipment and unparalleled resourcefulness. O'Reilly, for his part, mixes porcelain with bone powder and polyrethane resin to cast realistic biological altarpieces from silicone molds.

The artist let us in on the process behind his creations, which all start off as clay models. Silicone is applied by brush to the clay forms until the film reaches a 1/4-inch thickness. The mold is cut along a set of seams and reattached in a plaster mastermold for rigidity. The bone powder comes from his dog's leftovers, pu

lverized in the studio and added to the resin and porcelain mixture to create a translucent, off-white coloration.

Proiect care le-a adus celor doi artisti atat probleme cu autoritatile romane dar si un "mini-scandal" de presa, in urma performance-ului spontan al artistului rus din cadrul prezentarii pe care a sustinut-o la Noul Cinematograf al Regizorului Roman. Dupa vizionarea unui material video cu arestarea lui Oleg Vorotnikov și a Nataliei Sokol (membri VOINA) si luarea in custodie de catre politie a fiului acestora, Kasper, un spectator a afirmat ca membrii grupului VOINA sunt lasi, deoarece folosesc un copil ca scut viu. Alexei Plutser-Sarno l-a invitat pe scena pentru a-si sustine ideea. In momentul in care spectatorul s-a postat in fata artistului rus, acesta i-a dat o palma.

Tony lives in the Downtown Eastsidein the same building as his brother and sister in law. They have all been addicted to heroin for around 25 years. Tony lost his wife to AIDS 5 year ago. They had twin daughters who were born HIV positive and were taken away by the state immediately after birth. Tony is on the Methodone program, but continues to use heroin.

Claire Martin began her career by pursuing a degree in Social Work, however, she changed her focus to Photography when she realized that change can also be effected through this medium. Her ongoing documentation of marginalised communities within prosperous nations won her the Magnum Foundation 2010 Inge Morath award for Female Photographers under 30 years of age.

În ultimul dumneavoastră eseu, Le spectateur émancipé [Spectatorul emancipat](2008), ați lansat ideea conform căreia capacitatea critică a artei, concomitent cu abilitatea ei de a mobiliza, sunt astăzi în bernă. Ce înțelegeți prin asta?

A fost o vreme când arta avea clar un mesaj politic, iar critica încerca să deceleze acest mesaj în operele de artă. Mă gândesc la perioada lui Bertolt Brecht, spre exemplu, când teatrul denunța în mod explicit contradicțiile sociale și puterea capitalului, sau la anii 1960 și 1970, când a luat amploare denunțarea societății spectacolului de către Guy Debord: se credea atunci că numai arătând imaginile puterii – spre exemplu, o aglomerare de mărfuri sau niște starlete pe plajele de la Cannes – faptul ar putea da naștere conștientizării sistemului dominant și dorinței de a lupta împotriva lui. Aceasta e tradiția artei critice care, din punctul meu de vedere, de vreo douăzeci și cinci, treizeci de ani încoace este pe cale să dispară.

Până acum, proiectul galeriei se adresa pictorilor români deveniţi celebri în afara graniţelor ţării, iar acum, după cum mărturiseşte criticul de artă Radu Boroianu, directorul acestei galerii, se va orienta şi către pictorii mai tineri, între 40 şi puţin peste 40 de ani, vârsta începutului de maturitate creativă.

In cadrul unei ceremonii desfăşurate sâmbătă seară la Cinema Studio din Bucureşti, Uniunea Cineaştilor din România (UCIN) şi-a desemnat câştigătorii pe 2011. Juriul, format din Alexa Visarion, Cristina Corciovescu, Marian Crişan, Magda Mihăilescu, Irina Petrescu şi Vivi Drăgan Vasile, a desemnat drept câştigător al marelui premiu pelicula Ancăi Damian, „Crulic - Drumul spre dincolo".

Aceasta spune povestea reală a lui Claudiu Crulic, un român arestat în Polonia pentru un presupus furt, ţinut în închisoare în ciuda probelor ulterioare care arătau că, la data jafului, el nu se mai afla în capitala Poloniei, şi abandonat de toată lumea până la moartea survenită în urma grevei foamei.isarion, Cristina Corciovescu, Marian Crişan, Magda Mihăilescu, Irina Petrescu şi Vivi Drăgan Vasile, a desemnat drept câştigător al marelui premiu pelicula Ancăi Damian, „Crulic - Drumul spre dincolo".

Premiul special al juriului i-a revenit filmului „Din dragoste cu cele mai bune intenţii" de Adrian Sitaru, iar premiul pentru regie i-a fost acordat lui Constantin Popescu pentru „Principii de viaţă". Pentru interpretările din aceleaşi două filme, Bogdan Dumitrache, respectiv Vlad Ivanov au împărţit premiul pentru cea mai bună interpretare masculină.

Artistul foloseste termenul esemplastic pentru a semnala caracterul unitar al materializării gândurilor sale la intersectia mai multor dimensiuni si necesitatea de a deconstrui întregul pentru a capta iluzia de control, acest lucru survenind din lipsa capacitătii de a îmbrătisa incomensurabilitatea ansamblului universal mental.

Expoziţia „Do not dispose after use”, semnată Ioana Iacob reprezintă un mod inspirat de a investiga, prin intermediul picturii, cele mai obişnuite obiecte ale cotidianului. Prezenţa obiectelor denotă o anumită stare de spirit şi declanşează un tip de atmosferă ce serveşte privitorului o serie de referinţe erotice. Însa eroticul înfăţişat de Ioana Iacob nu provoacă, nu declanşează o tensiune sau o nervozitate, nu este nimic la vedere. Este vorba de un erotism bine controlat şi extrem de subtil, discret şi care apare într-un mod subversiv în toate lucrările Ioanei Iacob. Erotismul din picturile şi colajele semnate de Ioana Iacob deschide o nouă direcţie în pictura românească de gen, în care pornografia este îndepărtată şi camuflată de prezenţa unui ruj, a unui cactus, a unui pachet de ţigări, a unui iPod sau a unui set de cătuşe.

Sâmbătă, 17 martie, începând cu ora 22.00, Centrul Cultural de Evenimente Turbohalle îşi deschide porţile către publicul larg cu o seară de excepţie în care sunt adunate muzica bună, o expoziţie de artă contemporană şi un târg de fashion cu vânzare. Amplasat în imediata apropiere a staţiei de metrou Păcii, pe Bdul Iuliu Maniu nr. 220B, noul local aduce pe cele două mari scene, concepute pentru concerte, artişti precum nemţii Modeselektor (foto) şi Pfadfindere, care vă vor delecta cu un perfomance audio-vizual, englezii Redlight & Dread MC, The Model, Rotopercutor, Charlie Boy şi VRT. Din tablou nu va lipsi nici bine cunoscuta petrecere-concept BassTurbat cu Gojira, Sharky, Unlocka şi Planet H. De asemenea, evenimentul va aduce în atenţia publicului şi un târg de fashion cu vânzare, Silvia Şerban, Edita Lupea, Larisa Dragna şi brandurile Pezzi Di Sogni şi O-Pose fiind cei care îţi vor propune ţinute şi accesorii care mai de care mai interesante.

Patru artişti şi arta contemporană

Iar ca reţeta să fie completă, „Marea Inaugurare” de la Turbohalle vine şi cu o expoziţie de artă contemporană ce îi reuneşte pe unii dintre cei mai cunoscuţi şi premiaţi artişti români. Astfel, Cătălin Bădărău vine cu instalaţia ”Consumerism” şi o lucrare amplă cu 12 personaje, iar Ciprian Paleologu va prezenta două lucrări emblematice pentru întregul său mesaj artistic, “IV 12 - IV 17” şi “IV 1 - IV 5”. Anca Boeriu, în schimb, aduce în atenţia publicului lucrări din proiectul intitulat ,,Punct de sprijin”, în timp ce Iuri Isar va evidenţia, încă o dată, pasiunea sa pentru relaţia dintre bi şi tridimensional, cromatic şi acromatic, semn şi semnificaţie în cele trei lucrări ale sale şi un colaj între trei materiale asemănătoare.
